Among the sites of interest visited in this guide, several are associated with the Second World War. It was this second destructive conflict during the first half of the twentieth century which prompted the emergence of political and economic institutions designed to prevent the occurrence of another European war. These developments resulted in the creation of the European Union.

The European Movement, which also emerged after the Second World War, exists to promote the idea of greater European cooperation and unity. Today, the European Movement in Scotland (EMiS) acts as a non-party-political association with the purpose of developing a closer relationship between Scotland and the European Union and other parts of the continent.
